Turnberry's Ailsa Course, restored by Martin Ebert in 2016, is the most visually spectacular round in Britain. The 9th tee sits on a rocky outcrop 60 feet above the Firth of Clyde, the lighthouse guards the corner, and Ailsa Craig rises from the water eight miles offshore. This is where 'Duel in the Sun' was played — Watson v Nicklaus, 1977 — and where Watson nearly won again in 2009 aged 59.
Four Open Championships (Watson 1977, Norman 1986, Price 1994, Cink 2009). The Ebert restoration reshaped the closing stretch — the 9th moved out to the rocks, the 10th and 11th now play alongside the shoreline. The hotel is an Edwardian showpiece, refurbished 2014, and sits high above the course.

Recommended vehicle: Rolls-Royce Ghost for the hotel arrival. The Turnberry Hotel drive is one of Scotland's grand arrivals. The Ghost belongs on it. For groups, the Vito remains the practical answer.

How is the King Robert the Bruce course? Sister course, opened 2017 after significant renovation. Different character — more inland, still very good.
Is the drive from Glasgow worth it for a day trip? For the Ailsa, yes. But an overnight lets you play the King Robert the Bruce too.
