Golf has been played at Dornoch since 1616 — third-oldest recorded links after St Andrews and Leith. Donald Ross, architect of Pinehurst No. 2 and Seminole, grew up as the club's greenkeeper and took its principles to America. Royal status was granted in 1906.

Recommended vehicle: Rolls-Royce Ghost for the drive, Mercedes Vito for a group. It's a long, scenic run north — the Ghost was built for exactly this road. For a fourball with clubs, the Vito's flat load floor and rear cabin comfort matter over 90 minutes.

Dornoch is the long one: around 3 hours from Dundee and 3 hours 30 from Edinburgh Airport, so it is quoted as a day hire or as part of a Highlands itinerary rather than a simple return transfer. Most guests build it into a two- or three-day north tour with Castle Stuart or Nairn, with the car and chauffeur for the duration — which works out better value than repeated single legs and lets you take the A9 and Struie road at touring pace.

This is a genuine long-distance transfer — allow the full hour from Inverness, more from further south. We stock coffee, water and warm layers; the Highland weather changes fast.
Can we do Dornoch as a day trip from Edinburgh? Not sensibly — it's a 4-hour drive each way. Fly to Inverness or stay locally.
Is Skibo Castle available for guests? Skibo is a private members' club (The Carnegie Club). If your host is a member, we handle the transfer as normal.
Best months to play? May and September. June is beautiful but midgy inland; keep to the coast.
Should we fly into Inverness instead of Edinburgh for Dornoch? If Dornoch is the main event, yes — Inverness Airport is around 50 minutes away versus 3 hours 30 from Edinburgh. We meet Inverness arrivals with flight tracking and run the whole northern leg. If you are combining Dornoch with St Andrews or Gleneagles, Edinburgh usually still makes more sense overall.
