Dumbarnie Links, opened in 2020, is the newest genuinely great links in Scotland. Clive Clark's design uses 345 acres of raised coastal ground with panoramic views of Largo Bay across every hole. Fairways are generously wide, greens large and undulating, and the course is walkable in a way that many modern links are not.
The site was farmland until Clark and the Balcarres estate began routing in 2017. Fifteen of the eighteen holes have sea views. Ranked in the world's top 100 within a year of opening — the fastest ascent of any modern British course.

Recommended vehicle: Mercedes Vito for a fourball, Ghost for a pair. Dumbarnie pairs beautifully with Kingsbarns and the Old — three-day East Fife circuit. The Vito is the logistical answer for four; the Ghost for a hosted pair on a special day.

Dumbarnie sits in Largo Bay, 30 minutes from St Andrews and 40 from Dundee: returns from £240 from Dundee and from £430 from Edinburgh Airport. Because it is newer than the Fife classics, tee times are more available and green fees typically undercut the Old Course and Kingsbarns — which makes it the easiest round to add to an existing St Andrews itinerary without changing hotels.

Lundin Links and Leven Links — 5–10 min along the bay, two honest old links. Kingsbarns — 40 min north-east round the East Neuk. St Andrews Old Course — 30 min north — most guests base here and drive down. Fife wedding car hire — Same coastline, for non-golf occasions in the East Neuk.
The clubhouse and practice ground are new and generous — allow 45 minutes before your time to enjoy the range. Chauffeur waits or shuttles to lunch at the Old Manor.
Is Dumbarnie easier than the Old Course? Materially wider off the tee and more scoring opportunities. Greens are the defence.

Is it worth adding to a St Andrews trip? Absolutely. It's genuinely one of the top-ranked new courses in the world.
Is Dumbarnie a good choice for the first day of a Fife trip? It is our usual recommendation. The fairways are generous, the Largo Bay views settle everyone down, and it is an honest introduction to links bounce and wind before you face the Old Course or Kingsbarns. Morning tee times are also easier to get here than anywhere else in Fife.
